Relationship Styles – What does Polyfamily mean?
Polyfamily
A polyfamily is a family in which more than two adults connected through polyamorous relationships live together, share daily life or raise children together.
What does Polyfamily mean?
Polyfamily combines “poly”, short for polyamory, with family. It describes a family in which more than two adults connected through polyamorous relationships live together, share daily life or raise children together. Not every adult in a polyfamily has to be romantically involved with every other one. A polyfamily might be a triad sharing a home, a couple plus their partners who co-parent, or a whole polycule that feels like family.
How do children do in polyfamilies?
Research is still small, but long-term studies such as sociologist Elisabeth Sheff’s work with poly families suggest children do well when the adults are stable, honest and caring. Many kids enjoy having more trusted adults around. The tricky part is often the outside world: school, relatives and, in Germany, the law, which recognises only two legal parents per child. Families often use powers of attorney and wills to protect the other adults’ role.
Can a polyfamily get married?
Not as a group. In Germany, as in most countries, marriage is only possible between two people, and marrying a second person while still married is a crime. Some polyfamilies have one married couple, others none. Many write private agreements on money, housing and care, and celebrate commitment ceremonies that have no legal effect but mean a lot to them.
