Kink Talk – What does Vasectomy mean?
Vasectomy
A vasectomy is a minor surgical procedure in which the tubes that carry sperm from the testicles are cut or sealed, making a person with a penis permanently infertile.
What does Vasectomy mean?
Vasectomy comes from “vas deferens”, the Latin name of the sperm duct, and the Greek “ektomē”, meaning cutting out. In this minor procedure, a doctor cuts or seals both sperm ducts, so sperm can no longer reach the semen. It’s one of the most reliable forms of contraception. It usually takes about 15 to 30 minutes under local anaesthetic and is done as an outpatient procedure, typically by a urologist. Most people are back to normal activities within a few days.
Does a vasectomy change sex or orgasm?
No. Erections, desire, orgasm and the feeling of ejaculation stay the same. The testicles keep producing testosterone as before. Sperm make up only a tiny part of semen, so the amount looks practically unchanged. The sperm that are still produced are simply absorbed by the body. A vasectomy offers no protection against STIs, so condoms still matter with new partners.
Is a vasectomy effective right away?
No. Sperm remain in the ducts for a while after the procedure. Use other contraception until a semen analysis, usually after about 8 to 12 weeks, confirms there are no sperm left. A reversal is sometimes possible, but it’s complex and not guaranteed to work, so treat a vasectomy as permanent. In Germany it’s usually paid privately. A consultation with a urologist helps you decide.
