Kink Talk – What does Pull-Out Method mean?
Pull-Out Method
The pull-out method is a form of contraception in which the penis is withdrawn from the vagina before ejaculation, simple and free, but much less reliable than most other methods.
What does Pull-Out Method mean?
The name describes exactly what happens: pulling out before coming. Its medical name is coitus interruptus, Latin for “interrupted intercourse”, and it’s one of the oldest forms of contraception there is. It costs nothing and needs no device, which is why many couples use it, at least now and then. But it depends on perfect timing and self-control, every single time.
How reliable is the pull-out method?
Not very. With typical use, around 20 out of 100 people who rely on it get pregnant within a year. Even with perfect use it’s about 4 in 100. For comparison, the pill with typical use is around 7 in 100, and an IUD less than 1. The main problem is timing, since pulling out a second too late is easy. Pre-cum can also contain sperm in some people. If it fails, the morning-after pill can help, the sooner the better.
Does pulling out protect against STIs?
No. Infections like chlamydia, gonorrhea, herpes, HPV and HIV pass through skin contact and fluids long before anyone comes. With new or casual partners, condoms are the way to go. If you’re in a steady relationship and both tested, combining pulling out with another method is still much safer than relying on it alone.
