Orientations & Identities – What does soft butch mean?
Soft Butch
Soft butch describes a lesbian, sapphic or queer person whose style and vibe lean masculine like butch, but with softer, more feminine touches in look, manner or attitude.
What does Soft Butch mean?
Soft butch builds on butch, the word for masculine-presenting lesbians that has been part of lesbian culture since at least the mid 20th century. The “soft” signals a gentler version: short hair and a button-down shirt, maybe, but also some jewellery, a softer manner or a love of cosy knitwear. Soft butch is about expression and vibe, not a set of rules. Some people use it for their style, others as part of their identity, and it often shifts with mood and season.
What’s the difference between soft butch and futch?
They’re close neighbours. Soft butch leans butch with some softness, futch sits more squarely in the middle between femme and butch. In practice, the lines are blurry and people pick the word that feels right. Neither is better or more “real”, they’re just different points on the same playful scale.
Can you be soft butch if you’re not a lesbian?
Yes. The term comes from lesbian culture, but bi, pan, queer and non-binary people use it too, as do some trans people. What matters is that it describes your expression. Just keep in mind that butch has a long history in working-class lesbian communities, and using it with respect for those roots is part of the deal.
