Orientations & Identities – What does futch mean?
Futch
Futch describes a lesbian or queer person whose style and gender expression sit between femme and butch, mixing feminine and masculine elements in a way that feels true to them.
What does Futch mean?
Futch is a blend of femme and butch, the two classic poles of lesbian gender expression. It describes a lesbian or queer person whose style sits somewhere in between. A futch might wear a blazer with lipstick, or a short haircut with a floral dress, depending on the day. The label grew out of lesbian and sapphic communities and is used by women and non-binary people alike.
What’s the difference between futch and androgynous?
Androgynous describes a look that’s hard to read as either masculine or feminine. Futch is rooted in lesbian culture and its butch and femme history, and often mixes clear elements of both. So a futch person can look androgynous, but futch is also a nod to a specific community and its language.
Is futch the same as soft butch or chapstick lesbian?
They’re close relatives. Soft butch leans a bit more masculine, chapstick lesbian describes a sporty, casual look. Futch sits right in the middle between femme and butch. None of these labels come with rules. Use the one that feels right, switch when it doesn’t, and respect the words others use for themselves.
