Orientations & Identities – What does stem mean?
Stem
Stem is a lesbian identity and style that sits between stud and femme, mixing masculine and feminine expression, used especially in Black and Latina queer communities.
What does Stem mean?
Stem blends “stud” and “femme”. Stud is a term for masculine-presenting lesbians that comes from Black lesbian culture, femme stands for feminine presentation. A stem moves between both or combines them. One day that might mean sneakers, a fitted cap and baggy jeans, another day lashes and a dress. Stem describes style and identity together, and many stems value the freedom not to pick a side.
What’s the difference between stem and futch?
Both describe a mix of masculine and feminine expression. The difference is mostly cultural. Stem grew out of the stud and femme culture of Black and Latina lesbians, futch builds on the broader butch and femme tradition. People often choose the word that matches the community they belong to.
Can anyone call themselves stem?
Nobody polices labels, but stem has clear roots in Black queer culture. If you’re not part of that community, futch or soft butch might describe you just as well without borrowing someone else’s history. If you are, stem can be a proud name for a style that refuses to be just one thing.
