Orientations & Identities – What does mx. mean?
Mx.
Mx. is a gender-neutral title, usually pronounced “mix” or “mux”, used instead of Mr., Mrs. or Ms. by non-binary people and anyone who prefers not to signal their gender.
What does Mx. mean?
Mx. is a gender-neutral title that works like Mr. or Ms., with an X standing in for the gendered letters. It first appeared in print in the late 1970s and was added to the Oxford English Dictionary in 2015. Most people pronounce it “mix” or “mux”. It’s especially common in the UK, where many banks, government forms and universities offer it. Non-binary people use it most, but anyone can choose it.
How do you use Mx.?
Just like Mr. or Ms.: “Dear Mx. Taylor” or “Mx. Taylor will see you now.” In British English it’s often written without the full stop, as “Mx”. If you’re unsure which title someone uses, ask, or leave the title out and write their full name. Getting a person’s title right is a small gesture that shows respect.
Can cis people use Mx.?
Yes. Some cis people prefer it because they don’t want their gender or marital status on every letter. Still, it matters most to non-binary people, who otherwise get misgendered by every form that only offers Mr. or Ms. Adding Mx. as an option is an easy way to make forms and websites more inclusive.
