Toys & Props – What does Muzzle mean?
Muzzle
A muzzle is a leather, rubber or silicone mask worn over the mouth, often shaped like a dog’s snout, used in pup play and BDSM as a look and a symbol of control.
What does Muzzle mean?
The word comes from the muzzle put on dogs to stop them biting. In kink it’s a mask over the mouth and chin, held by straps behind the head, and a staple of pup play and other dog-themed play. Some are a cage of straps, others look like a snout. For many pups it’s part of the outfit, often paired with a pup hood. It also works as a symbol: the handler decides when the muzzle comes off, when the pup gets a treat or may speak. Some have a built-in gag, most just cover the mouth or keep it closed.
Is wearing a muzzle safe?
Yes, as long as breathing stays completely free. The nose must stay completely free, and the muzzle shouldn’t press on the nostrils or throat. Check the fit before a scene: you should be able to slide a finger under the straps. Because talking is limited, agree on a non-verbal safe signal, like tapping twice or dropping a toy. Take it off at once if the wearer panics or feels sick, so choose buckles or clips that open quickly. Never leave someone muzzled alone.
What’s the difference between a muzzle and a gag?
A gag goes into the mouth to muffle speech, a muzzle sits over it. With most muzzles you can still make sounds, bark or talk a little. So a muzzle is more about look and role than about silencing. If you want both, some come with a detachable gag, and then the same rules apply as for any gag: short sessions and a non-verbal stop signal.
