Orientations & Identities – What does enby mean?
Enby
Enby is a casual, affectionate short form of non-binary, from the pronunciation of the letters N and B, used for people whose gender is neither exclusively male nor female.
What does enby mean?
Enby is how you say “NB”, short for non-binary, out loud. The spelled-out version is often said to have caught on partly because NB is also used for “non-Black” in some anti-racist spaces. Enby describes a person whose gender is neither exclusively male nor female. It’s friendly and casual, a bit like “guy” or “girl”, and works as a noun (“Sam is an enby”) or an adjective. The plural is enbies. You’ll also hear cute spin-offs like “enbyfriend” instead of boyfriend or girlfriend.
Is it okay to call someone an enby?
If they use it for themselves, yes. Many non-binary people love it, others find it too cutesy or childish and prefer non-binary. As with every label, follow the person’s lead. And being enby says nothing about how someone looks, dresses or which pronouns they use.
What pronouns do enbies use?
Many use they/them, but some use she, he, a mix, or neopronouns like xe or ey. No set of pronouns comes with the label. The easy way is to ask, or to share your own pronouns first. If you get it wrong, correct yourself and move on.
