Orientations & Identities – What are pronouns?
Pronouns
Pronouns are the words people use for you instead of your name, like she, he or they, and they usually reflect your gender identity.
What are pronouns?
Pronoun comes from the Latin “pronomen”, literally “in place of a name”. Pronouns are the words people use for you instead of your name, like she, he or they. Many people never think about theirs because others guess right. For trans and non-binary people, being called the right pronouns is a basic sign of respect, which is why some share them in bios, signatures or introductions. Singular “they” has been part of English for centuries.
How do you ask someone’s pronouns?
Just ask, ideally by sharing your own first, like “I’m Sam, I use he/him. What about you?” That makes the question normal instead of singling anyone out. If you can’t ask, use their name or “they” until you know. Don’t guess from looks, because appearance doesn’t tell you someone’s gender.
What should you do if you get someone’s pronouns wrong?
Correct yourself briefly and move on, like “She, sorry, he said…” A long apology puts the person on the spot and makes the moment about you. Simply get it right next time. If someone else misgenders a person, a calm correction helps, as long as the person is fine with you speaking up.
