Kink Talk – What does Sterilization mean?
Sterilization
Sterilization is a permanent form of contraception in which a doctor blocks, cuts or removes the tubes that carry sperm or eggs, through a vasectomy or a tubal sterilization.
What does Sterilization mean?
Sterilization comes from the Latin “sterilis”, meaning infertile. In contraception it means a procedure that permanently prevents pregnancy by interrupting the path of sperm or eggs. For people with testicles, that’s a vasectomy, a short outpatient procedure under local anesthetic that cuts and seals the sperm ducts. For people with a uterus, it’s tubal sterilization, where the fallopian tubes are blocked, cut or removed, usually by keyhole surgery under general anesthesia. Both are among the most reliable methods there are.
Does sterilization change sex or hormones?
No. Desire, arousal and orgasm stay the same, and the body keeps making its own hormones. After a vasectomy, ejaculation looks practically unchanged. After tubal sterilization, periods continue as before. A vasectomy isn’t effective right away, so use other contraception until a semen analysis shows no sperm. Neither procedure protects against STIs, so condoms still matter with new partners.
Can sterilization be reversed?
Sometimes, but it’s complex surgery with no guarantee, so treat sterilization as final. Take your time with the decision and don’t let anyone pressure you into it or out of it. In Germany it’s usually paid privately unless there’s a medical reason. A urologist or gynecologist can explain the procedure, risks and costs in a consultation.
