What does Breathwork Together mean?
Breathwork is a modern English term from wellness, yoga and tantra circles for any practice that uses the breath on purpose. Breathwork together means synchronised or guided breathing with a partner to build arousal, deepen connection or reach altered states. It can be as simple as matching your breathing while spooning, or as structured as one partner guiding the rhythm through a whole session. It often goes hand in hand with tantra and soul gazing.
Is breathwork safe?
Slow, calm breathing together is safe for most people, but fast, deep breathing has side effects. Breathing hard for a long time can cause dizziness, tingling hands or cramps, all signs of over-breathing. If that happens, slow down and breathe normally. Breathwork is never about holding or restricting someone’s breath, which would be breath play and carries serious risks. If you have heart, lung or seizure conditions or are pregnant, check with a doctor before intense practices.
How do you start breathwork with a partner?
Lie or sit close, ideally spooning or face to face, and simply notice each other’s breathing for a minute. Then match it, in through the nose and slowly out. Next, try alternating, one exhales while the other inhales, almost like passing the breath back and forth. Five calm minutes are enough to feel the shift.
