Orientations & Identities – What does gold star mean?
Gold Star
Gold star is slang for a gay man or lesbian who has never had sex with someone of another gender, a label some wear proudly and others criticise as divisive.
What does gold star mean?
The term borrows the gold star stickers teachers hand out for top marks, as if never having slept with another gender were an achievement. A gold star lesbian has never had sex with a man, a gold star gay man has never had sex with a woman. It comes up in jokes, on dating profiles and in community banter, mostly among lesbians. For some it’s a playful badge, for others an outdated idea.
Why is gold star controversial?
Because it turns sexual history into a ranking. It suggests that people who had sex with other genders, often before coming out, are somehow less gay. That hits bisexual people, late bloomers and anyone who came out after years in straight relationships. It can also exclude trans people, because it reduces sex and gender to body parts. Many queer people now avoid the term or use it only ironically.
Does past sex with another gender make you less gay?
No. Your orientation is about who you’re attracted to now, not your list of past partners. Many people only figure out who they are after trying what was expected of them. Experience doesn’t erase identity, and nobody owes anyone proof of how gay they are.
