Kink Talk – What are physical limits?
Physical Limits
Physical Limits are the injuries, health conditions, disabilities and body boundaries you share with a partner before play, so positions, intensity and activities can be adapted to your body.
What are physical limits?
Physical Limits is a plain term from kink negotiation, where a limit is a line that doesn’t get crossed. It covers the injuries, chronic conditions, disabilities or other physical boundaries you mention to a partner before play begins. Think bad knees, a sensitive back, asthma, joint problems, a heart condition, medication that affects blood pressure, or simply a body part you don’t want touched. Sharing it isn’t a mood killer. It lets your partner plan a scene that actually works for your body.
Which physical limits should you mention?
Mention anything that could change how your body reacts to positions, restraint, impact or exertion. That includes old injuries, joint or back problems, circulation issues, asthma, epilepsy, diabetes, pregnancy, recent surgery and medication like blood thinners, which make bruising more likely. Also say how long you can kneel or hold a position. Not sure whether something matters? Mention it anyway.
How do you adapt kink to physical limits?
Swap positions, add pillows, shorten scenes and choose gentler tools. There’s almost always a version that works. Restraints can be loose or symbolic, kneeling can become sitting, impact can skip a sore area. Build in more check-ins and keep safety scissors at hand for bondage. Bodies change from day to day, so ask “How’s your body today?” before you start.
