Kink Talk – What does DDF mean?
DDF
DDF is profile shorthand for “drug and disease free”, used on dating and hookup apps to signal negative STI tests and no drug use, a phrase many now see as stigmatising.
What does DDF mean?
DDF comes from personal ads and later hookup apps, where it stands for “drug and disease free”. People use it to signal that they don’t use drugs and have tested negative for STIs. It sounds practical, but the phrase has problems. “Disease free” implies that people with an STI or HIV are dirty or unsafe, and it says nothing about when someone last tested. Many people now skip it and share clearer, more honest info instead.
What’s wrong with saying DDF?
Mostly two things. It stigmatises people living with STIs or HIV, and it promises more than any test can. A test only shows your status at one moment, and some infections take time to show up. People living with HIV who have an undetectable viral load can’t pass it on through sex, known as U=U, yet “disease free” would shut them out. The label creates false security while shaming others.
What can you say instead of DDF?
Share concrete, current info instead of a label, for example the date of your last STI test, whether you take PrEP, or your HIV status if you’re comfortable sharing it. Then talk about condoms and other safer sex choices before you meet. It’s more honest, more useful and doesn’t put anyone down. For testing and advice, a doctor, a health office or a sexual health clinic can help.
