Orientations & Identities – What does gender expression mean?
Gender Expression
Gender expression is how you show your gender outwardly, through clothes, hair, makeup, voice, body language and behaviour, whatever your gender identity is.
What does gender expression mean?
Gender expression is a term from gender studies and the trans and queer community, used to separate how someone looks and acts from who they are. It means how you show your gender outwardly, through clothes, hair, makeup, voice, body language and behaviour. Everyone has a gender expression, not only queer people. It can be feminine, masculine, androgynous or a playful mix, and it can change with the day, the mood or the outfit.
What’s the difference between gender expression and gender identity?
Gender identity is who you are inside, gender expression is what you show on the outside. They often match, but they don’t have to. A woman with a suit and short hair is still a woman, and a man in nail polish is still a man. Sexual orientation is a third, separate thing. It’s about who you’re attracted to.
Does gender expression tell you someone’s orientation?
No. How someone dresses or talks says nothing certain about their identity or who they love. A femme man can be straight, a very masculine woman can be straight too, and an androgynous person can be anything. If it matters, for dating or for pronouns, the respectful move is to ask rather than guess from looks.
