Kink Talk – What does Rule 34 mean?
Rule 34
Rule 34 is an internet saying that if something exists, someone has made porn of it, usually meaning adult fan art of characters from games, cartoons and films.
What does Rule 34 mean?
Rule 34 comes from a list of joke “rules of the internet” that circulated on forums and image boards in the 2000s. Number 34 says that if something exists, there is porn of it. Today people use it, often shortened to R34, for adult fan art and fan fiction about characters from games, anime, cartoons and films. Saying “Rule 34” is also a running joke when something innocent suddenly looks oddly sexy.
Is Rule 34 legal?
Drawn or written adult content about fictional adult characters is generally legal for adults, though laws differ between countries and platforms set their own rules. There is one hard line. Anything that sexualises minors is never okay, and in many countries, including Germany, that also covers drawings and stories. Sexual images of real people made without their consent, including deepfakes, can also be a crime.
Why does Rule 34 exist?
Because the internet is huge and fandoms are creative. If enough people love a character, some of them will want to see that character in a sexy light. For many fans it’s playful, a way to explore attraction to a fictional figure without involving anyone real. Adult fan art is a big part of fandom culture, and it usually lives in tagged, age-gated spaces so people who don’t want to see it can avoid it.
