Kink Talk – What does Cervix mean?
Cervix
The cervix is the narrow lower end of the uterus that reaches into the top of the vagina, with a small opening that lets menstrual blood out and sperm in.
What is the cervix?
Cervix is Latin for neck, because it’s the neck of the uterus. It’s the narrow lower end of the uterus, a few centimetres long, that reaches into the top of the vagina. A small opening in the middle lets menstrual blood out and sperm in. If you reach deep into the vagina, it feels firm and round, often compared to the tip of a nose. Its position and feel change during your cycle, and during arousal it lifts up and back, which makes room for deeper penetration.
Why does it hurt when something hits the cervix?
The cervix doesn’t like being bumped. Hard or deep thrusting against it can cause sharp pain or cramps, especially when you’re not fully aroused yet. More foreplay, shallower positions, a soft bumper ring that limits depth and letting the receiving partner control depth all help. Some people enjoy gentle deep pressure there. If sex often hurts or you bleed afterwards, see a doctor.
How do you keep your cervix healthy?
Get the HPV vaccine, ideally before you become sexually active, and go to cervical cancer screening when it’s due. HPV causes almost all cervical cancers, and screening finds changes early, when they’re easy to treat. Condoms lower the risk of HPV and other infections that can affect the cervix, like chlamydia and gonorrhea. Bleeding after sex or between periods, unusual discharge or pelvic pain are reasons to see a gynaecologist.
