Orientations & Identities – What does bigender mean?
Bigender
Bigender describes people who experience two genders, either at the same time or moving between them, and it falls under the non-binary umbrella.
What does bigender mean?
Bigender combines the Latin prefix “bi”, meaning two, with “gender”. It describes people who experience two genders, either at the same time or moving between them. The two genders can be woman and man, but also one of those plus a non-binary gender. Some bigender people change their pronouns, name or style depending on how they feel, others don’t change anything outwardly.
What’s the difference between bigender and genderfluid?
Bigender means two specific genders. Genderfluid means your gender changes over time and isn’t limited to two. A bigender person tends to move between, or hold, the same two genders. A genderfluid person might experience many different genders, or shift in less predictable ways. Some people feel both labels fit, and that’s fine too.
Is bigender non-binary?
Yes, bigender usually falls under the non-binary umbrella, because the person’s gender isn’t only woman or only man. Not every bigender person calls themselves non-binary, though. Labels are personal, so the respectful way is to listen to how someone describes themselves and which pronouns they ask you to use.
