Kinks & Fetishes – What does Protocol & Rules mean?
Protocol & Rules
Protocol & Rules is a defined set of behaviours, rituals and expectations within a power exchange dynamic, such as how a submissive speaks, sits or greets their dominant.
What does Protocol & Rules mean?
Protocol comes from the Greek “prōtokollon”, the first sheet glued to a manuscript roll, and later came to mean the formal etiquette of diplomacy and the military. In kink, Protocol & Rules is a defined set of behaviours, rituals and expectations within a dynamic. Rules are the everyday agreements, like a bedtime or a morning text. Protocol is the more formal layer: how to address the dominant, kneeling on arrival, asking permission to speak. Some couples keep it light, others live it around the clock.
What are some examples of BDSM protocol?
Common examples are titles like Sir, Ma’am or Master, kneeling or taking a set position when your dominant enters, asking permission to orgasm, and rules about eye contact. Rules often reach into daily life too: a morning message, a chosen outfit, a journal or a ritual with a collar. The best protocols are few, clear and meaningful to you both, not a long list nobody remembers.
How do you set up rules in a D/s relationship?
Sit down outside of a scene and write them together. Start with three or four rules, agree what happens when one is broken, and decide when protocol is on and when it’s off, for example never at work or with family. Review them regularly, because needs change. The submissive can always ask to renegotiate, and a safe word still overrides any rule.
