Kink Talk – What is the prostate?
Prostate
The prostate is a small gland below the bladder that helps make semen, and because it is rich in nerves, many people enjoy stimulating it through the perineum or the anus.
What is the prostate?
Prostate comes from the Greek “prostates”, meaning “one who stands before”, because the gland sits in front of the bladder’s exit. It’s a small gland in people with a penis that adds fluid to semen, and it’s often called the P-spot. It’s surrounded by nerves, so pressure on it can feel intense and deep, and for some people it leads to a different, full body kind of orgasm. You can reach it indirectly from outside through the perineum or directly through the anus, toward the belly.
How do you stimulate the prostate safely?
Go slow, use plenty of lube, and keep nails short and smooth, because the tissue inside the anus is delicate and doesn’t make its own lubrication. Start outside with gentle pressure on the perineum. If you go inside, relax first, use a finger or a toy made for anal play with a flared base, and press lightly toward the front of the body. Stop if anything hurts. Pain means slow down, not push through.
Does liking prostate play say anything about your orientation?
No. Prostate pleasure is about nerves, not about who you’re attracted to. Straight, gay, bi and queer people all enjoy it, alone or with any partner. On a separate note, prostate health check-ups become a topic as you get older, and that’s something to talk about with a doctor, not something play can tell you.
