Kink Talk – What is an intimacy coordinator?
Intimacy Coordinator
An intimacy coordinator is a professional who plans and safeguards sex and nudity scenes on film, TV and stage sets, so actors agree in advance on what happens and feel safe.
What is an intimacy coordinator?
The job title joins “intimacy”, from the Latin “intimus”, meaning innermost, with “coordinator”, and it comes from the world of film, TV and theatre. An intimacy coordinator plans and safeguards sex and nudity scenes, so everyone agrees in advance on what is shown and touched. The role became widely known in the late 2010s after the #MeToo movement, when big TV and streaming productions began hiring them as standard. Some productions call it intimacy director. They don’t replace the director and they aren’t therapists. Their focus is consent and safety.
What does an intimacy coordinator actually do on set?
They make sure every intimate moment is agreed before the camera rolls. Together with the actors and the director, they settle exactly what is shown, what is touched and what is off limits. Then they choreograph the scene like a stunt, step by step, and arrange modesty garments and barriers between bodies. On the day they keep the set small, check in with the actors and make sure anyone can pause or withdraw consent at any time, without consequences.
What can couples learn from intimacy coordinators?
Quite a lot, especially if you play with kink. The core idea is simple. Talk a scene through before it starts, not in the middle of it. Agree on what you both want, set clear limits and pick a stop signal, like a safe word or a tap for when talking is hard. Check in now and then during play, and talk afterwards about what worked. It’s not unromantic, it’s what lets you both relax and let go.
