Orientations & Identities – What does neutrois mean?
Neutrois
Neutrois is a non-binary gender identity describing a neutral or null gender, neither man nor woman, sometimes combined with a wish for a body that looks less gendered.
What does neutrois mean?
Neutrois is built on the French “neutre”, meaning neutral, and appeared in the mid 1990s in early online trans communities. It describes a gender that feels neutral or null, neither man nor woman. It sits under the non-binary umbrella and is closely related to agender. Some neutrois people also call themselves agender, others feel the neutrality itself is their gender, not the absence of one.
What’s the difference between neutrois and agender?
They overlap a lot. Agender usually means having no gender at all. Neutrois more often means a gender that is neutral, a quiet middle rather than a blank. In practice the line is personal, and many people use whichever word feels closer. The only reliable guide is how someone describes themselves.
Do neutrois people transition?
Some do. Part of the neutrois community wants a body that looks less gendered, for example through chest surgery, hair removal or hormone treatment. Others transition only socially, with a neutral name, clothes and pronouns like they/them, or not at all. As with every trans or non-binary identity, there’s no required path, only the one that feels right for you.
