Orientations & Identities – What does queer mean?
Queer
Queer is an umbrella word for anyone who isn’t straight or isn’t cisgender.
What does queer mean?
Queer originally meant strange or odd in English and may come from the German “quer”, meaning across or oblique. Today it’s an umbrella word for anyone who isn’t straight or isn’t cisgender. It’s roomy and doesn’t need explaining, which makes it popular with people who are fluid, unsure, or just don’t want to be pinned down.
Is queer an offensive word?
It was used as an insult for a long time and has since been proudly reclaimed by many. Using it as a description is fine, especially if the person uses it themselves. Some older people still hear it as a slur, so if someone prefers gay or lesbian, use that.
What’s the difference between queer and LGBTQ+?
LGBTQ+ is an acronym that lists specific groups: lesbian, gay, bi, trans, queer and more. Queer is one word that covers all of them at once. Many people use queer for themselves and LGBTQ+ when talking about the community as a whole.
