Kink Talk – What does Triggers Talk mean?
Triggers Talk
Triggers Talk is the conversation where you share your known triggers with a partner before sex or play, so they can steer around them and know what helps if one hits.
What does Triggers Talk mean?
The word trigger comes from psychology, where it means a cue that brings back the feelings of a painful experience. Triggers Talk is the conversation where you share those cues with a partner beforehand, so you can plan around them together. Triggers can be words, names, a tone of voice, touch on certain body parts, positions, smells or being held down. You decide how much of your story to tell. Often “please never call me that” or “don’t touch my neck” is enough.
How do you talk about triggers with a partner?
Pick a calm moment outside of sex and share what to avoid and what helps if it happens anyway. You don’t owe anyone the details of your past. Name the trigger, how it might show up in you, like freezing or going quiet, and what you need then, such as stopping, a blanket or some space. As the listener, say thank you, don’t push for more and don’t start treating your partner as fragile.
What should you do if a trigger comes up during sex?
Stop right away, check in calmly and follow what your partner asks for. Someone who freezes or goes silent may not be able to say their safe word, so watch body language, not just words. Offer comfort without crowding, and talk it through later when you both feel steady. If old trauma keeps surfacing, a trauma-informed therapist can help.
