Kink Talk – What is herpes?
Herpes
Herpes is a very common viral infection caused by the herpes simplex virus that leads to cold sores or genital blisters and can be managed well but not cured.
What is herpes?
Herpes comes from the Greek “herpein”, to creep, after the way the sores seem to spread across the skin. It’s caused by the herpes simplex virus, HSV, which comes in two types. HSV-1 usually causes cold sores on the lips and HSV-2 usually causes genital herpes, but both can show up in either place. Most people carry at least one type, and many never notice. After the first infection the virus stays in the nerve cells and can flare up now and then as an outbreak. Having herpes says nothing about you as a person, and with a little care you can have a normal sex life.
How do you get herpes?
Herpes spreads through skin and mucous membrane contact, including kissing and vaginal, anal or oral sex. Oral sex with a cold sore can pass HSV-1 to the genitals. It’s most contagious during an outbreak, from the first tingling until the sores have fully healed, so skip kissing and sex then. It can also pass on when no sores are visible. Condoms and dental dams lower the risk but don’t fully prevent it, because they don’t cover all skin. Telling a partner before sex is fair and usually goes better than you fear.
Can herpes be cured?
No, but it can be managed well. Antiviral medication from a doctor shortens outbreaks and makes them milder, and taking it regularly can reduce both outbreaks and the chance of passing it on. The first outbreak is often the worst, with tingling, small blisters that turn into sore spots and sometimes a flu-like feeling. Later ones are usually milder and less frequent. A doctor or a sexual health clinic can confirm herpes with a swab from a fresh sore. If you’re pregnant, let your doctor know.
