Orientations & Identities – What types of asexuality are there?
Types of Asexuality
The ace spectrum includes asexual people, who feel little or no sexual attraction, and related identities such as demisexual, graysexual, aegosexual, fraysexual and cupiosexual, which describe when, how often or in what way attraction shows up.
What makes an identity part of the ace spectrum?
Each one describes sexual attraction that is absent, rare, conditional or disconnected from wanting sex. Demisexual people need a bond first, graysexual people feel attraction rarely, and aegosexual people enjoy fantasies without wanting to take part. How someone feels about sex itself is a separate question: some ace people are sex-repulsed, others enjoy sex.
Is asexuality the same as celibacy?
No. Celibacy is a choice not to have sex. Asexuality is an orientation about attraction, and it isn’t an illness or a phase. Many ace people date, love and have relationships, often alongside a romantic orientation like biromantic or aromantic.
What types of asexuality are there?
10Ace Spectrum
The Ace Spectrum is the umbrella term for asexual identities, covering everyone who feels little, rare or only conditional sexual attraction, from asexual to demisexual, graysexual and beyond.
Aegosexual
Aegosexual describes someone who enjoys sexual fantasies, erotic stories or porn, but feels little or no desire to actually take part in sex with another person.
Akoisexual
Akoisexual describes someone who feels sexual attraction, but loses it or feels uncomfortable once the other person returns the interest, so the attraction works best when it stays one-sided.
Aroace
Aroace describes people who are both aromantic and asexual, meaning they feel little or no romantic attraction and little or no sexual attraction.
Asexual
Asexual, or ace, describes people who feel little or no sexual attraction to others.
Cupiosexual
Cupiosexual describes someone who feels little or no sexual attraction but still wants a sex life or a sexual relationship, for example for closeness or pleasure.
Demisexual
Demisexual describes someone who only feels sexual attraction after forming a strong emotional bond with a person.
Fraysexual
Fraysexual describes someone who feels sexual attraction mostly to people they don’t know well, with that attraction fading as emotional closeness grows.
Graysexual
Graysexual describes people who feel sexual attraction rarely, weakly or only in certain situations.
Sex-Repulsed, Sex-Neutral & Sex-Favorable
Sex-repulsed, sex-neutral and sex-favorable describe how someone, often an asexual person, feels about having sex themselves: put off by it, indifferent to it, or open to enjoying it.
