Orientations & Identities – What does MSM & WSW mean?
MSM & WSW
MSM & WSW stand for men who have sex with men and women who have sex with women, health terms that describe behaviour rather than identity.
What does MSM & WSW mean?
MSM & WSW come from public health and research, where they are used to describe behaviour rather than identity. MSM means men who have sex with men, WSW means women who have sex with women. The point is that a man who has sex with men may not call himself gay, and a woman who has sex with women may identify as straight, bi or something else. Health services need terms that reach everyone with similar health needs, whatever label they use.
Why do doctors and clinics use MSM?
Because good health advice depends on what people do, not on what they call themselves. Recommendations for regular STI testing, PrEP or certain vaccinations are often aimed at MSM. A behaviour term makes sure men who don’t identify as gay or bi still get the right information. If you’re unsure what applies to you, ask a doctor, a health office or a sexual health clinic.
Do women who have sex with women need STI testing?
Yes. Some infections pass less easily between women, but STIs can still spread through skin contact, body fluids and shared toys. Regular testing, cleaning or covering shared toys and using barriers like dental dams lower the risk. Ask your doctor or a clinic which tests make sense for you, and say openly who you have sex with so you get the right advice.
