Kink Talk – What does Image-Based Abuse mean?
Image-Based Abuse
Image-based abuse is sharing, or threatening to share, someone’s intimate images or videos without their consent, including hidden filming and sexual deepfakes.
What does Image-Based Abuse mean?
Image-based abuse is the term researchers and support services use instead of “revenge porn”, because it isn’t porn and it isn’t always about revenge. It means sharing, or threatening to share, someone’s intimate images without their consent. It covers nudes leaked by an ex, secretly filmed videos, hacked photos and deepfakes, where AI puts a real person’s face onto sexual images. Even if a picture was once sent willingly, passing it on without consent is abuse.
Is image-based abuse illegal?
Yes, in Germany and many other countries it’s a crime. Laws differ from place to place, but secretly filming someone in an intimate situation, sharing intimate images without consent and using them for threats can all be punished. Many countries are also tightening their rules on sexual deepfakes. Platforms usually ban this content and remove it once it’s reported.
What should you do if your intimate images are shared?
First, know that it’s not your fault. The person who shared them broke your trust, and often the law. Save evidence before anything disappears, with screenshots, links, usernames and dates. Report the content to each platform and ask for it to be taken down. You can go to the police, and a counselling service for victims of digital violence can help with the next steps and with the stress, which is very real.
