BDSM Roles – What does Dom mean?
Dom
A Dom is the person who takes control in a consensual power exchange, guiding the scene, giving instructions and taking responsibility for their partner’s safety.
What does Dom mean?
Dom is short for dominant, which goes back to the Latin “dominus”, meaning lord or master. A Dom is the person who takes control in a consensual power exchange, guiding the scene and setting the rules. The control is given, not taken. It can stay in the bedroom or shape a whole relationship, and it can look strict, playful or tender. Anyone of any gender can be a Dom.
What does a Dom do?
A Dom leads. They plan the scene, give instructions, decide the pace and keep an eye on how their partner is doing. Good Doms ask about limits beforehand, respect the safe word without discussion and stay present for aftercare. The power only works because the sub trusts it, so care is part of the role, not an extra.
How do you become a good Dom?
Start with talking, not with gear. Ask what your partner wants, what’s off limits and how they signal stop, and agree on a safe word. Begin small, check in often and read body language. Afterwards, ask what worked. Confidence grows with practice. Not sure your partner is into it? Dom only shows up as a match in the Consent Check if you both said yes.
