BDSM Roles – What does Pony mean?
Pony
A Pony is someone who takes the role of a horse in pony play, trained, groomed and shown by a handler, often wearing harness and tack.
What does Pony mean?
Pony comes from the pony play community, which borrows its language from horse training and equestrian shows. A pony is the person who takes the role of the horse, trained, groomed and shown by a handler. Ponies often wear a harness, a bridle, hoof-style boots or a tail, and communicate with stomps, snorts and body language instead of words. Some focus on looking proud and elegant, others on obedience and training drills.
What kinds of ponies are there?
The three classic types are cart pony, show pony and riding pony. A cart pony pulls a light cart, a show pony shows off gait, posture and dressage-style moves, and a riding pony carries the handler. Riding is the riskiest part. Never sit on a person’s back, because the spine isn’t built to carry weight that way. Safer setups are best learned in person from experienced people.
Why do people enjoy being a pony?
For many it’s about mindset: discipline, pride and focus. Training, holding perfect posture and being praised for a good performance can feel deeply satisfying, and responding to simple commands without speaking quiets a busy head. The gear, the show and the bond with the handler are part of the fun too. As with any role, limits and a non-verbal stop signal are agreed beforehand.
