BDSM Roles – What does Bottom mean?
Bottom
A bottom is the person receiving the action in a scene, such as being spanked or tied, which doesn’t necessarily mean they’re submissive.
What does Bottom mean?
Bottom comes from the plain English word for the lower position, and both the BDSM and the queer community use it for the receiving partner. A bottom is the one receiving the action, but not necessarily submissive. A bottom can love sensation without any wish to obey. Someone who enjoys a hard flogging but sets every rule is a bottom, not a sub. Bottom describes what happens to you, sub describes who holds the power.
What’s the difference between a bottom and a sub?
A bottom receives the action, a sub hands over control. Many subs are also bottoms, but not all. A sub might serve or follow orders without receiving any sensation, and a bottom might enjoy intense play with no power exchange. In queer slang, bottom also means the receptive partner during sex.
How do you bottom safely?
Know what you want and what you don’t, and say it clearly before the scene. Agree on a safe word, and use it without guilt the moment something feels wrong. Tell your top about health issues, old injuries or sore spots. Speak up during play, ask for aftercare afterwards, and remember that you are the one who sets the limits.
