Kink Talk – What does Poz & Neg mean?
Poz & Neg
Poz & Neg is dating and hookup app shorthand for HIV-positive and HIV-negative, used on profiles and in chats to share your HIV status.
What does Poz & Neg mean?
Poz and neg are short for “positive” and “negative” and come from gay community slang, where they became the everyday way to talk about HIV status. Poz & Neg is app shorthand for HIV-positive and HIV-negative. On profiles you’ll also see variants like “neg on PrEP”, meaning HIV-negative and taking PrEP to stay that way, or “poz undetectable”, meaning HIV-positive with a viral load kept below the detection limit by treatment.
What does undetectable mean?
Undetectable means HIV treatment keeps the virus so low that standard tests can’t measure it in the blood. People who stay undetectable on treatment don’t pass HIV on through sex. That’s the idea behind U=U, undetectable equals untransmittable. So a partner who is poz and undetectable can be a lower risk than someone who says neg but hasn’t tested in a while. Condoms still protect against other STIs, and a doctor or a clinic can tell you what fits your situation.
Do you have to share your HIV status?
Sharing your status is a personal choice, and how much you put on a profile is up to you. Laws on disclosure differ between countries, so check what applies where you live. Stigma does real harm. Reacting to “poz” with fear or rejection keeps people from testing and talking openly. A simple “thanks for telling me” goes a long way, and regular testing is the best way to know your own status.
