Toys & Props – What does Straitjacket mean?
Straitjacket
A straitjacket is a jacket with extra-long, closed sleeves that wrap the arms crossed in front of the body and buckle behind the back, used in bondage for full upper-body restraint.
What does Straitjacket mean?
Straitjacket comes from the old word “strait”, meaning tight or narrow, not “straight”. It’s a jacket with long, closed sleeves that cross the arms in front of the body and fasten behind the back, so the wearer can’t use their arms. It was once used to restrain patients in psychiatric hospitals, and escape artists like Houdini made it famous on stage. In kink, it’s a full upper-body bondage garment, often canvas, leather or latex, loved for the total helplessness and for medical or asylum roleplay.
Is a straitjacket safe for bondage?
It can be, with care. The crossed arms and tight straps around the torso can restrict breathing, so the chest must be able to expand fully. Never tighten it so far that breathing gets shallow. The wearer can’t catch themselves when falling, so keep them away from stairs and hard edges, and never leave them alone. Agree on a safeword, watch for numb hands or overheating, and know how to open every buckle fast. Safety shears belong within reach.
How is a straitjacket different from an armbinder?
An armbinder holds the arms together behind the back in a single sleeve, which puts more strain on the shoulders. A straitjacket crosses the arms in front and wraps the whole torso. That makes a straitjacket gentler on the shoulders and better for longer wear, though it feels more enclosing. Many people try both and choose by comfort and mood.
