Orientations & Identities – What does in the closet mean?
In the Closet
In the closet describes someone who isn’t open about their sexual orientation or gender identity, either with everyone or with certain people like family or colleagues.
What does in the closet mean?
The closet stands for a hiding place, the same image behind “coming out of the closet”, or coming out for short. Being in the closet means keeping your sexual orientation or gender identity to yourself. Few people are fully in or fully out. Many are out to friends but closeted at work or with family. Someone who is open with a small circle but hides it everywhere else is still partly in the closet.
Is it okay to stay in the closet?
Yes. Coming out is your decision, and staying closeted can be the safest choice, for example if you depend on family for money or housing or live somewhere hostile. Hiding can still weigh on you over time. Talking to one trusted person, an online community or a queer counselling service can ease the pressure without coming out to everyone.
What if your partner is in the closet?
Respect their pace and never out them, not even to people you think would be fine with it. Talk about what it means for you as a couple, like how you introduce each other or what you post online. It’s fair to share your own needs too, since hiding a relationship can hurt the hidden partner. Look for compromises you can both live with.
