BDSM Roles – What does Trainer mean?
Trainer
A Trainer is the dominant partner who teaches a sub or a pet, like a pony or pup, agreed rules, positions and behaviour through practice, rewards and consistent correction.
What does Trainer mean?
Trainer comes from the everyday word for someone who coaches people or animals. In kink, a Trainer is the dominant partner who teaches a sub or a pet, like a pony or pup, the rules, positions and behaviour of their dynamic. Training can mean learning to kneel in a certain way, answer with the right honorific, walk with a high step as a pony or respond to commands as a pup. Some trainers work with one partner long term, others mentor several people in a community.
What’s the difference between a trainer and a handler?
The words overlap a lot. A handler usually cares for and guides a pet day to day, a trainer focuses on teaching skills and behaviour. In pony play, a trainer may drill gaits and posture while the owner or handler looks after the pony overall. In D/s the trainer can be someone other than the Dom, for example an experienced player who teaches a new sub protocol. One person can easily be all of it.
How does good training work?
Agree on the goals together first, and write down rules and positions so both of you know what’s expected. Training only works with consent and a clear way to say stop. Reward more than you correct, keep sessions short and build skills step by step. Positions like kneeling strain knees and back, so use padding and change often. Check in regularly about whether the training still feels good, and adjust it when life or bodies change.
