BDSM Roles – What does Top mean?
Top
A top is the person doing the action in a scene, such as spanking or tying, which doesn’t necessarily mean they’re the one in charge.
What does Top mean?
Top comes from the plain English word for the upper position, and both the BDSM and the queer community use it for the active partner. A top is the one doing the action, such as spanking or tying, but not necessarily the one in charge. Top describes who acts, Dom describes who holds the power. Often it’s the same person, but a sub can top a Dom on request, for example by spanking them on command.
What’s the difference between a top and a Dom?
A top does the action, a Dom holds the control. Most Doms also top, but plenty of tops have no interest in power at all. They just enjoy giving sensation. In queer slang, top also describes the penetrating partner during sex, with no BDSM meaning attached.
What makes a good top?
A good top is skilled, attentive and responsible for the bottom’s safety during the scene. That means learning your tools, warming up, agreeing on limits and a safe word, and watching body language closely. Check in often, stay sober enough to judge well, and stick around for aftercare. Tops can need aftercare too, so ask for it.
