Orientations & Identities – Which LGBTQ+ terms are specific to Germany?
LGBTQ+ Terms in Germany
LGBTQ+ terms in Germany cover the laws, official markers and events that shape queer life there, from the Self-Determination Act and the gender marker “divers” to Christopher Street Day and the partial ban on conversion therapy.
What makes a term specific to Germany?
These words come from German law or German queer life. Since the end of 2018, “divers” has been an official third gender option, after a ruling by the Federal Constitutional Court. The Self-Determination Act, in force since November 2024, lets adults change their gender entry and first name with a declaration at the registry office, without medical reports.
What else should you know about queer life in Germany?
Pride is mostly called CSD here, after Christopher Street in New York, and almost every larger city holds its own parade in summer. Same-sex marriage has been legal since 2017, and the old law against sex between men was only fully abolished in 1994. Conversion therapy is partly banned and punishable.
