BDSM Roles – What does Owner mean?
Owner
An Owner is the dominant partner in a consensual dynamic who symbolically “owns” a pet or sub and takes responsibility for their care, rules and training.
What does Owner mean?
Owner is plain English, borrowed by BDSM and pet play for the partner who “owns” a sub or pet by agreement. The Owner is the dominant side, setting rules, giving care and often a collar. The ownership is symbolic and consensual. It lives in rituals, titles and agreed rules, never in real property, and either partner can end it at any time. Many Owners describe the role as much about responsibility and care as about control.
What’s the difference between an Owner, a Handler and a Master?
All three are dominant roles, but they set different tones. An Owner usually has a lasting, caring bond with a pet or sub. A Handler guides and trains a pet, often in pup or pony play, and the bond can be looser or limited to scenes. Master pairs with slave and points to a stricter, more formal power exchange with protocols and service.
What does an Owner do?
An Owner sets the rules of the dynamic and takes care of the person who submits to them. That can mean choosing rewards and corrections, structuring routines, training a pet, and keeping an eye on their wellbeing, from water breaks to aftercare. A good Owner checks in regularly and respects the limits you both agreed on, because trust is what makes the ownership work.
