BDSM Roles – What does Masochist mean?
Masochist
A masochist, in BDSM, is someone who enjoys receiving pain or intense sensation from a trusted partner, by choice and within limits they set themselves.
What does Masochist mean?
Masochist comes from the name of Leopold von Sacher-Masoch, a 19th century Austrian writer whose novel “Venus in Furs” tells of a man who longs to be dominated by a woman. In BDSM, a masochist is someone who enjoys receiving consensual pain. For a masochist, pain in the right setting turns into pleasure, release or a deep, floaty high. They choose what they receive, and they can stop it at any time.
Why do some people enjoy pain?
Pain triggers endorphins and adrenaline, and in a safe, aroused setting that rush can feel euphoric. Many masochists describe a calm, floaty state afterwards, often called subspace. For others it’s about endurance, letting go or the intimacy of trusting someone that much. Enjoying chosen pain doesn’t mean you enjoy stubbing your toe.
How can a masochist stay safe?
Know your limits and say them clearly before any scene, including body areas that are off limits. Use a safe word and a pain scale, and don’t let the rush talk you into more than you agreed, because endorphins can mask injuries. Play with partners you trust, check for marks afterwards and ask for the aftercare you need.
