Toys & Props – What does Lube mean?
Lube
Lube, short for lubricant, is a water-, silicone- or oil-based gel or liquid that reduces friction and makes sex, masturbation and toy play glide more easily.
What does Lube mean?
Lube is short for lubricant, from the Latin “lubricus”, meaning slippery. It’s a water-, silicone- or oil-based gel or liquid that reduces friction during sex, masturbation and toy play. Using lube is completely normal and not a sign that something is wrong. Arousal, hormones, stress, medication or simply a long session can all mean less natural wetness, and lube just makes everything smoother and more comfortable.
Which lube should you use?
Water-based lube works with everything, condoms and all toys included, and washes off easily. It dries out faster, so you may need to add more. Silicone lube lasts longer and is great for anal sex and in the shower, but it can damage silicone toys, so do a spot test first. Oil-based lube breaks down latex condoms, so only use it without latex. For anal play, lube isn’t optional, since the anus doesn’t get wet on its own.
How do you use lube?
Put a little on your fingers, the toy or the condom rather than straight onto your partner, and warm it in your hand first. Start with a small amount and add more whenever things feel dry or sticky. Too much is rarely a problem. Keep the bottle within reach so you don’t have to stop, and pick a lube without fragrance or warming effects if you’re sensitive.
