Kink Talk – What does Metamour mean?
Metamour
A metamour is your partner’s other partner, someone you’re connected to through a shared partner without necessarily dating them or even being close yourself.
What does Metamour mean?
Metamour joins the Greek prefix “meta”, meaning beyond or alongside, with the French “amour”, love, and comes from the polyamory community. It means your partner’s other partner. Metamours can be anything from near strangers to close friends who go on holiday together. Some polyamorous people prefer “kitchen table” setups where everyone gets along, others like “parallel” arrangements where metamours rarely meet. Both work when everyone knows what to expect.
Do you have to be friends with your metamour?
No. Friendly respect is the usual baseline, but friendship isn’t required. Some metamours become close and hang out without the shared partner, others just say hello at birthdays. What matters is being civil, not competing and not putting the shared partner in the middle. Talk honestly about how much contact feels right for each of you.
How do you meet your metamour for the first time?
Keep it low pressure. A coffee or a walk somewhere neutral works well. It’s normal to feel nervous or curious. Treat it like meeting a friend of a friend, not an interview. The shared partner can set it up or come along, but give the two of you space to talk directly too.
