Orientations & Identities – What does trans mean?
Trans
Trans describes people whose gender identity differs from the sex they were assigned at birth, including trans women, trans men and many non-binary people.
What does trans mean?
Trans comes from the Latin “trans”, meaning across or beyond, and is short for transgender. It describes people whose gender identity differs from the sex they were assigned at birth. A trans woman is a woman who was assigned male at birth, a trans man is a man who was assigned female at birth, and some non-binary people call themselves trans too. Respecting the name and pronouns someone uses is the simplest way to get it right.
What does transitioning mean?
Transitioning means the steps a trans person takes to live as their gender, and it looks different for everyone. It can be social, like a new name, pronouns or clothes, legal, like changing documents, and medical, like hormones or surgery. Not every trans person wants or does all of these, and none of them decides whether someone is “really” trans. In Germany, the Self-Determination Act has let people change their gender entry and first name at the registry office since November 2024.
Is being trans a sexual orientation?
No. Being trans is about gender identity, who you are, not about who you’re attracted to. Trans people can be straight, gay, lesbian, bi, pan or asexual, like anyone else. Being trans is also not a kink or a fetish, and treating a trans person as a fantasy rather than a person hurts. If you’re dating someone trans, ask which words and touch feel good to them, just as you would with any partner.
