Toys & Props – What does Water-Based Lube mean?
Water-Based Lube
Water-based lube is a lubricant with water as its main ingredient that works with every condom and sex toy material, feels natural and washes off easily, but dries out faster than silicone lube.
What does Water-Based Lube mean?
Water-based lube is named after its main ingredient: water, thickened with things like cellulose, glycerin or aloe to make a slippery gel or liquid. It’s the most common type of lube and the safe all-rounder. It works with latex and other condoms, dental dams and every toy material, silicone included, and it rinses off skin and sheets with plain water. That makes it the go-to choice for beginners, toy play and safer sex.
What are the downsides of water-based lube?
It dries out faster because the water gets absorbed or evaporates, so you may need to add more during longer sessions. Often a few drops of water or saliva revive it. It also washes away in the shower or bath. Some formulas contain lots of glycerin or are very concentrated, which can irritate sensitive mucous membranes, and some people find they get yeast infections more easily. If you’re prone to irritation, look for glycerin-free, low-osmolality lube or one with a pH that suits the vagina.
Is water-based lube good for anal sex?
Yes, especially with toys or condoms. Pick a thicker, gel-style lube, which stays in place and cushions better than a thin, runny one. Use more than you think and reapply often, since the anus doesn’t make its own lubrication. Skip numbing lubes, they hide pain that tells you to slow down. For very long sessions, some people switch to silicone lube, as long as no silicone toys are involved.
