Kink Talk – What does Sexual Self-Esteem mean?
Sexual Self-Esteem
Sexual self-esteem is how comfortable, confident and worthy you feel as a sexual being, including how you see your body, your desires and your right to pleasure.
What does Sexual Self-Esteem mean?
Sexual self-esteem is the part of your self-esteem that relates to sex. It covers how comfortable and confident you feel with your body, your desires and your right to pleasure, and how much you trust yourself to say yes, no or “like this”. It’s shaped by upbringing, past experiences, body image, partners’ reactions and messages from porn and media. It isn’t fixed: it can drop after a breakup or a hurtful comment and grow again with good experiences.
What are signs of low sexual self-esteem?
Common signs are hiding your body, sex only in the dark, faking orgasms, not asking for what you want or going along with things you don’t enjoy. Constant comparison, worrying about how you look or perform during sex and feeling you have to earn affection with sex can also point to it. None of this is a personal failure, and almost everyone knows some of it.
How can you build sexual self-esteem?
Get to know your body on your own terms, for example through masturbation, and find out what you like without anyone watching. Practise naming one wish or one limit at a time. Choose partners who respond with curiosity, not judgement. Body neutrality can help when body love feels out of reach. If shame or past experiences weigh heavily, a sex therapist can support you.
