Orientations & Identities – What does sexually fluid mean?
Sexually Fluid
Sexually fluid means your attraction can shift over time.
What does sexually fluid mean?
Fluid comes from the Latin “fluidus”, meaning flowing. Sexually fluid means your attraction can shift over time. Who you’re into at 20 might not be who you’re into at 40, and that’s completely normal. The idea became widely known through psychologist Lisa Diamond’s research, especially her book Sexual Fluidity from 2008.
Is sexual fluidity the same as being bisexual?
No. Bisexual describes attraction to more than one gender. Fluid describes attraction that changes over time. A fluid person might be straight for years and then fall for someone of their own gender. Some fluid people also call themselves bi, some queer, some just fluid.
Is it normal for your sexuality to change?
Yes. Plenty of people notice their attraction move at least a little over their lifetime, and research finds it especially often among women. Change isn’t confusion. You don’t have to change your label every time either: fluid can be the label.
