Orientations & Identities – What does androgynous mean?
Androgynous
Androgynous describes a look, style or identity that mixes masculine and feminine traits or sits somewhere between them.
What does androgynous mean?
Androgynous comes from the Greek “andr-”, meaning man, and “gyn-”, meaning woman, so literally man-woman. It describes a look, style or identity that mixes masculine and feminine traits or sits somewhere between them. Most often it’s about style. Sharp tailoring with soft makeup, gender-neutral haircuts, a look people can’t quickly read as male or female. Fashion and music have played with androgyny for decades.
Is androgynous a gender identity?
It can be, but usually it describes a look rather than who someone is. Anyone can have an androgynous style, whether they’re a man, a woman or non-binary. Some people also use androgyne as their identity, meaning their gender itself sits between or combines male and female. If you’re unsure which one someone means, ask.
What’s the difference between androgynous and non-binary?
Androgynous mostly describes expression, non-binary describes identity. A non-binary person doesn’t identify only as a man or a woman, but they might dress very femme, very masc or anything in between. An androgynous-looking person, on the other hand, might be a cis man or woman who simply likes that style. Agender, meaning no gender at all, is yet another identity.
