Kink Talk – What does Vaginal Dryness mean?
Vaginal Dryness
Vaginal dryness is a lack of natural moisture in the vagina that can make sex uncomfortable or painful, caused by low arousal, hormonal changes, medication, stress or irritation.
What does Vaginal Dryness mean?
Vaginal dryness means there’s too little natural moisture in the vagina. It can feel like burning, itching, friction or soreness, and it often makes penetration uncomfortable or painful. It’s very common and can happen at any age. Some people notice it only during sex, others in everyday life too. It says nothing about how much you desire your partner: wetness and desire don’t always line up.
What causes vaginal dryness?
A frequent cause is simply too little arousal: not enough time, foreplay or relaxation before penetration. Hormonal changes play a big role too, especially menopause, breastfeeding, the time after giving birth and some hormonal contraceptives. Other causes include certain medications like antihistamines or some antidepressants, cancer treatments, stress, smoking, and harsh soaps, douching or scented products.
What helps against vaginal dryness?
Take more time for foreplay and use lube generously. Water-based lube works with all condoms and toys, silicone lube lasts longer but isn’t always safe with silicone toys. Avoid scented products and wash only with water. Vaginal moisturisers used regularly can help with everyday dryness. If it lasts, hurts or appears after menopause, see a gynaecologist. Local hormone treatment or other options may help, and it’s worth ruling out infections.
