Kink Talk – What are digital boundaries?
Digital Boundaries
Digital Boundaries are agreements about what can be sent, saved or shared digitally between partners, including nudes, sexy messages, recordings, screenshots and location sharing.
What are digital boundaries?
Digital Boundaries applies the everyday idea of personal boundaries to phones and the internet, a topic that grew with sexting and dating apps. It covers what can be sent, saved or shared, from nudes and sexy messages to recordings, screenshots and location sharing. One partner may love sexting but hate the idea of anything being saved. Another may be fine with photos, just not with their face in them. Talking about it early prevents hurt and protects you both.
What should you agree on about nudes and sexting?
Agree on whether nudes are welcome, whether they may be saved, and that they never leave the chat. Ask before sending, since unsolicited nudes are unwelcome and can be illegal, for example in Germany. Agree on face-free photos if privacy matters, disappearing messages, no screenshots, and deleting everything if you split up. Only adults should ever send or receive sexual images.
How do you protect intimate content digitally?
Lock your phone, keep intimate files out of shared or automatic cloud backups, and turn off message previews on the lock screen. Avoid identifying details like your face, tattoos or background. If someone breaks the agreement or threatens to share your images, save the evidence and get help, it’s not your fault. Want to know if your partner sees it the same way? Digital Boundaries only shows up as a match in the Consent Check if you both said yes.
