Kink Talk – What is hepatitis C?
Hepatitis C
Hepatitis C is a liver infection caused by the hepatitis C virus, spread mainly through blood, often silent for years and curable for most people with modern antiviral treatment.
What is hepatitis C?
Hepatitis comes from the Greek “hepar”, meaning liver, plus “-itis”, meaning inflammation, and the C simply follows A and B in the order the viruses were named. Hepatitis C is a liver infection caused by the hepatitis C virus, HCV for short. Most people notice nothing for a long time, maybe some tiredness. Left untreated, it often becomes chronic and can slowly damage the liver over many years, which is why testing matters even when you feel fine.
How is hepatitis C spread?
Hepatitis C spreads mainly through blood-to-blood contact, for example via shared needles, snorting straws, razors or toothbrushes. During sex the risk is low, but it rises when blood is involved, as with rough anal sex, fisting, shared toys or sex during a period, and more so if you also have HIV. Use gloves for fisting, put a fresh condom on shared toys and never share straws or needles. There’s no vaccine, so these habits are your protection.
Is hepatitis C curable?
Yes. Modern antiviral tablets taken for a few weeks cure most people, usually with few side effects. It starts with a blood test. Antibodies can take a couple of months to show up, while a test for the virus itself works earlier, so tell your doctor when the risk happened. A doctor or sexual health clinic can test you. Being cured doesn’t make you immune, so you can catch it again.
